Souped Up Detail Pages and … Graphs!

Viewed 463 times, 6 so far today

Behind the scenes I’ve been working on the redesign of the detail pages. For those not blessed with a keen eye, the fonts are now larger and the statistics are more detailed and easier to look at. Being a freak for statistics, I thought of adding a cool feature where you can monitor your rank for the past week and compare it to another blog.

Click on the ‘View Rank History’ button to see your blog’s rank history charted on a neat-looking graph.

You may also compare your history to another ratified blog:

Hope you like this new feature. As always, more coming soon… :)

Au Revoir, Technorati. Bonjour, Yahoo!

Viewed 4385 times, 6 so far today

Back when Ratified.org started, the only metrics that determined the rankings came from Technorati.com. I had since added other forms of metrics (Google PR, Feedburner, Alexa), but I was startled when Technorati suddenly announced that they were ending their API. They say they were going to replace it with a new one. It’s almost been a year, and I see no replacement in sight. I received a few complaints that having Technorati around compromises the ranking system because there was no way for new blogs to obtain a Technorati rank. They were right. I looked around for a replacement that allowed Ratified.org to record incoming links and be flexible enough to withstand daily updates. Google would be the obvious choice, but they offered no API to make that possible. So I opted for familiar territory, Yahoo’s BOSS API. I’ve had good experience using Yahoo! BOSS for Alleba.com’s search engine. It’s fast and easily customizable. Integrating into Ratified.org would pose no problem.

Blogs in Ratified.org now have a new metric called Yahoo! Inlinks. Basically this is the number of links coming from other sites pointing to yours. You might notice that numbers coming from Yahoo! and Technorati show quite a stark difference. One explanation is incoming links stored in Technorati expire after 6 months and count only blogs rather than a wide range of websites, whereas Yahoo! is a robust search using Microsoft’s Bing engine. As I was playing around with the new algorithm, I think Yahoo! Inlinks is an excellent addition to Ratified.org’s ranking system. I took a break from tinkering the code as I write this, so expect a bit more movements in the rankings in the days to come.

To commemorate this major change, I also moved things around in the site design, including the logo. Hope you like it.

Feedburner and your Ratified Rank

Viewed 744 times, 6 so far today

Your blog’s number of subscribers weighs heavily in determining your Ratified.org rank. Many blogs that are listed on Ratified.org have their Feedburner feeds included, but their subscribers are not being counted. Why? Signing up for a Feedburner feed opens up a slew of options that you probably missed, such as something we call the Awareness API.

The Awareness API allows developers to build applications that can display, analyze and promote your feed’s traffic data outside of FeedBurner.

In other words, Ratified.org could not record your number of subscribers until you’ve opened up your feed’s Awareness API. It only takes one button click to activate it.

1. Log on to Feedburner and click on the appropriate feed.
2. Click on the Publicize tab.
3. On the left hand menu, click on Awareness API.
4. On the succeeding page, click Activate.
5. Done.

After that, see your rank skyrocket! (Let me know if it didn’t)

If you don’t have a Feedburner feed yet, sign up for one!

I’m excited to resume our series of interviews with people making their marks in the local blogosphere. And what better way to kick it off than with GenSan Blogger Avel Manansala. I’ve known Avel since 2008 when we had our very first Davao Food Appreciation Tour (DFAT). Since then he has been making waves in his community through his blog, GenSan News Online Mag, and received several awards in recognition of excellence in his craft. Here is our interview:

Philippines Top 10 Blog Movers

Viewed 3268 times, 7 so far today

With formula changes and new metrics included, measuring the growth of Philippine blogs will require a much longer period of time to generate. However for this mid-year report, we intend to give a snapshot by reporting top 10 blog movers in terms of Feedburner subscription, Technorati authority, and Alexa rank growth.

Here are the blogs that made it to list covering the period of January 2009 to June 2009. Note that only those with base data as of January 2009 were included in this report:

Technorati Top 10 Movers

Feedburner Top 10 Movers

Alexa Top 10 Movers

I’ll be presenting the above and observations on blogging growth trends as well in our webinar this August 18 from 11 am to 12 noon (Manila time). Feel free to join if you have time.
