Topping the Philippines Top 100 Blogs for 2008 is Jehzlau Concepts. Jehzeel Laurente shares his secret.

Janette: What have you done this year for your blog that contributed to its growth?

Jehzeel: I don’t know exactly what I did to make my blog grow this big. My visitors, after reading my blogs, subscribe to it even if it is not that good compared to other blogs. I don’t know why. On the sides though, I did some minor SEO experiments and applied it to my blog. I think this may be one of the contributing factors why my blog metrics increased. You see, after applying some SEO techniques that I’ve learned form other Internet Marketing and SEM blogs, there was a tremendous increase in my RSS feeds subscribers, Technorati blog reactions and Alexa rank. Another thing that may have helped boost my blog is assisting newbie bloggers on how to start blogging. I taught them the very basics of blogging like how to install a WordPress blog or Blogspot blog, how to install a theme, a plug-in, and other extensions, what are the do’s and don’ts in blogging, how to increase your traffic, and how to make money out of it. As time goes by, they became my friends both online and offline and then my subscribers. I also entertain anonymous text messages from other newbie bloggers and befriend them. Basically, I think these small things contributed to my blog’s growth this 2008.

Janette: What marketing strategy works best for your blog?

Jehzeel: Referrals or word of mouth works best for my blog. I tell my friends to visit my blog and subscribe to my feeds. I tell them that it’s worth subscribing at Jehzlau Concepts. Haha! Social networking thru Plurk and Twitter is also an effective marketing strategy for my blog. I make friends from these social networking websites. I share with them my knowledge on blogging, SEO and other web stuff. And eventually, they become my subscribers and daily visitors.

Janette: How much % of your annual income do you attribute to your blog as the source?

Jehzeel: After resigning from my day job, blogging has become my main source of income. About 90% of my annual income comes from my blog and other websites that I maintain. 10% comes from my freelance work which is developing corporate websites for clients abroad and in the Philippines as well. I’m also writing simple PHP, ASP.NET and ActionScript Apps, designing XHTML+CSS web layouts, and doing some logo and graphic designs.

Janette: What tips can you give to bloggers who would like to achieve blog growth?

Jehzeel: Avoid plagiarism. Write even if you’re not that good in writing. Read and apply tips from other well established blogs. Blog anything that your heart desires. If you have questions about blogging, just send me an SMS, I’m always glad to help.
